Background of the Customer

The customer is a manufacturer of high-precision plastic components, specializing in injection molding, metallization and value-added assembly for demanding industrial applications. Combining advanced production technologies with in-house engineering expertise, the company supplies complex plastic parts for the automotive, electrical engineering, telecommunications and environmental sectors, with a strong focus on precision, certified quality processes and continuous innovation.

What was the requirement?

The customer needed to replace an existing gripper that was neither functional nor reliable, caused by a poorly manufactured mold. Since the part design had already been approved by the end customer, modifying the mold was not an option. The parts, made of polypropylene (PP), were difficult to demold and remove due to the material’s high shrinkage combined with the mold’s poor quality.

Our offered Solution

We developed a new end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) that slides behind the part’s grid as the ejectors retract, using custom-manufactured nylon fittings, and pulls the part off the ejection plate. The solution also handles the removal of a large number of sprues, with the grippers controlled via an electrical signal to ensure no sprues are left behind in the mold. To keep costs down, part presence is monitored using only a small suction cup on each side of the part.

What was the benefit for the customer?

The new EOAT solved the demolding and removal issues caused by the mold’s limitations, without requiring any changes to the already-approved part design. The cost-conscious sensing approach and reliable sprue removal ensured a robust, efficient production process tailored precisely to the customer’s constraints.
