Background of the Customer

The customer is a global automotive technology company specializing in the development and production of advanced mobility solutions, including driving assistance systems, vehicle electrification technologies, thermal systems, lighting, and interior solutions. Combining innovative engineering, software expertise, and highly automated manufacturing processes, the company supports safer, cleaner, and smarter mobility, providing leading vehicle manufacturers with technologies that enhance comfort, efficiency, and autonomous driving capabilities.

What was the requirement? 

The customer needed a gripper for a two-component production process manufacturing plastic parts for air conditioning units, in which a polypropylene (PP) blank, injection-molded in one mold cavity, is transferred to a second cavity for overmolding with rubber. The solution had to be lightweight, rigid, and flat, offered at a competitive price, and built using partially manufactured parts.

Our offered Solution

We designed a gripper built around the customer’s strict requirements for sufficient rigidity combined with low overall weight, using fasteners that do not increase the assembly’s overall size while enhancing rigidity through their sheet metal construction. A flat VTCF suction cup was used to transfer the molded parts to the second mold cavity. Since the mold’s centering system was already integrated and our standard system could not be used, we prepared the plates to accommodate it, along with the necessary preparation for the customer-supplied Schunk gripping system from their own inventory.

What was the benefit for the customer?

The customer received a lightweight, rigid, and space-efficient gripper solution tailored precisely to their mold’s existing centering system and production requirements, delivered at a competitive price while making effective use of partially manufactured components already available.
