Background of the Customer

The customer is a Hungarian precision machining company with more than two decades of experience in manufacturing plastic components, the majority of which are used in medical devices. As technical requirements have evolved, the company has placed increasing emphasis on coordinate measurement, with a growing share of parts now requiring 100% inspection.

What was the requirement? 

To optimize this inspection process, the customer partnered with Carl Zeiss to define a measurement strategy and launch a joint development project. As part of this collaboration, Tech-Con Hungária was brought in to integrate a Universal Robots robotic arm for automated part handling and feeding into the Zeiss coordinate measuring machine — enabling full, non-stop measurement of every produced part.

Our offered Solution

Within six months, Tech-Con built a complete testing and automation system from the ground up, integrating the robot with the Zeiss measuring machine, which was pre-prepared for external control. This allowed rapid communication setup between the robot and the CMM. Before the final purchase, both Zeiss and Tech-Con gave the customer the opportunity to test the setup — measuring cycle times, exploring the robot’s user interface, and providing feedback on part layout. Thanks to the machine already being installed during the test phase, final system deployment took only a few days.

What was the benefit for the customer?

The robotic solution classifies each part after measurement and automatically sorts it into the appropriate output bin. Measuring machine utilization rose from 40–50% to 100%, freeing quality control staff from a monotonous manual task. Inspection now runs in parallel with production, giving immediate feedback to the manufacturing process and making the entire measurement workflow significantly more predictable and plannable.
